Down Shannon Lane Style

Ridiculous weather changes have disrupted my style lately. It’s chilly outside when I wake up, it’s freezing in my office, and it’s super hot when I head home in the afternoon. So, I’m embracing the weather outside by wearing my new red cropped pants lots before it’s too cold. I’m dealing with the temperature inside by wearing comfy jackets and scarves.

Recently, I was browsing a couple of my favorite blogs and this outfit (to the right) caught my eye. I love the way that she paired a turquoise necklace with the black and white striped shirt, black cardigan, and red jeans. The turquoise is just a light touch of another coloring so it’s not too overpowering. In my outfit, the turquoise sunglasses are a terrible match but my favorite color is teal and I never know where to look when I’m taking these style photos. In the above photo, I was mostly avoiding the fact that a spider was about to crawl on my camera, which only made me think about how reading this will totally freak out my sister. After checking out the picture I decided that it was necessary to ditch one of the accessories. Yes, this outfit would be better suited for only one accessory. So scarf or sunglasses?

DIY Compost Bin

I love almost everything about our new house. It has more charm than the last house. I like the layout more. I love the hardwood floors. The yard is fantastic. But I miss having a garage, a dishwasher, and, oddly the most important, a garbage disposal. I make a lot of meals with vegetables meaning there’s always scraps. So I used to throw things in the field behind our old house or put it down the garbage disposal. Well, simply throwing the old food in our backyard is not an option unless I want to attract lots of animals. So I needed a new plan. I recently pulled all the weeds in the front of my house and I’m going to plant some bulbs soon. Well I would love to have some nutrient-rich soil, made for free in my own backyard to use in my garden. So I decided to make a compost bin!

Exploring at the Park

Your life is defined by a series of moments. Many of them are seemingly mundane. Sitting at your desk at work, driving your car, watching commercials… But the others. The others are amazing. Gazing at a flowing waterfall, climbing to the top of the hill to overlook a beautiful pond, watching majestic geese glide along the pond, the good feeling that comes from the smile of a dog….

DIY Fabric Covered Lampshade

I hate overhead lighting. For some reason it gives me headaches. During our big move I left behind a couple of old lamps and now I’m very much regretting it. We only have 4 lamps. One in the living room, one in the office, and two in the bedroom. So I have been in search of new lighting solutions. I attempted to hang large bulb string lights in hopes that my living room would look like a beautiful parisian cafe. Well it turned out looking trashy and they started falling down after the first day. So I decided to search for a cute little lamp. Well, today I found the perfect one at Walmart on sale for $5 and I snatched it right up!

I really liked the tripod style. But I didn’t like the plain lampshade. So I decided to jazz it up! As with all projects I can’t do anything without the help of tiny friends.

Down Shannon Lane Style: Day 2

Welcome to day 2 of my style philosophy. On my recent shopping trip I wanted to find to find several pieces of clothing that I could mix and match. A couple of months ago, I referenced some of my favorite magazine articles that I have compiled into a fun book so I was looking for a similar variety of items that would be interchangeable.

I love the way they use plain statement pieces to make so many versatile outfits. I have almost all of the different pieces to make these outfits and I can’t wait to get funky and bold to do this with what I have!

Down Shannon Lane Style: Day 1

Fashion has never really been important to me. I wear what is comfortable and what looks nice on my body. I do care about looking nice but in the past this has only required nice jeans, plain ‘ole t-shirts, some cute dresses, and jackets. I am OBSESSED with comfy jackets over plain t-shirts that I dress up with a fun necklace or scarf. This fashion philosophy works amazingly for me. Because of my simple philosophy, I really haven’t updated my wardrobe much since high school. (Hence, my recent urge to clean all “teen” clothes out of my closet.) So earlier this week I went on a fun shopping trip with my mom and we managed to find some fun new adult pieces to add to my wardrobe!

DIY Magazine Ad Art

I have always been creative. My favorite class in school was always art. I loved creating something beautiful …. beautiful for an elementary school art project. I still love creating and my favorite projects are the ones that are simple and cost-effective, aka free! When I was in Junior High I loved making collages with cut up magazines. In fact, I still have an old picture frame that I mod podged with fun magazine clippings. So when I was flipping through my most recent issue of Better Homes & Gardens, and came across an adorably designed advertisement, I had an idea!

1. I cut the ad to size ….

Working

I have finally found a job since the move! Cue a happy puppy:

Okay, I actually found 3 part-time jobs and it was 2 weeks ago but I have been waiting to start them before writing about it. So, what am I doing? I’m working in an office writing content for a vacation website (Yay for finally using my degree!), I’m also personal assisting my “other mother” with random tasks and chores, and working as a receptionist at a vet. Now this is not necessarily what I thought I would be doing in this juncture of my life, but I am hoping that experience in multiple areas will diversify my resume so that I can find the job I want.

“Daily Life” Page

Check out the new “Daily Life” page above to see a roundup of all posts about Japhy, Butters, hiking, cooking, etc. It’s a great place to check out the behind the scenes here at DownShannonLane.

As you can see, Butters and Japhy are simply ecstatic about the new page.

True Friendship

You know you love someone when 24 hours away from them is painful. Butters spent a day at the vet being spayed and Japhy spent every minute missing her. He is dying to play with her but she is way too sore. So he has settled on being as close to her as possible.
